PILSNER, KOLSCH, & LAGER

Lager, German for “storage”, though a specific style on its own also refers to beers made with a bottom fermenting yeast and are fermented at a much lower temperature than ales, 40F or below, resluting in their clean taste, crisp finish, and clarity. Color ranges from the golden, crystal clear Pilsners and Kolschs to the bready, cloying Bocks and dark Schwartzbiers. The malt is definitely the star of the styles with hops playing a complementary role.

PORTERS & STOUTS

These two styles beg the question “what’s the difference?” and in truth the lines are so blurred it’s hard to ascertain. There is nothing set in stone, but a few general qualities can be associated with each style. Porters tend to be more brown than black, typically use a varitey of chocolate malts, and have a hint of nuttiness. Stouts are generally opaque black, utilize roasted and patent malts, offer bold, complex flavors, and make more use of coffee notes and ingredients. So, what IS the difference? That answer is probably best left to you so try a few and decide for yourself.

BROWN ALES

Color is the only qualifying characteristic for this sundry category. Ranging from English ales to Flanders to Porters as long as its brown it can make the cut. Browns typically use brown malts as a base and have a sweeter finish. One of the more common varieties of this style is a Nut Brown ale.

IPAs

IPA stands for “India Pale Ale” and is a style that has been around for 200 years but its popularity has really taken off with the explosion of the craft beer market over the last twenty years and shows no signs of waning. Still made with mostly plae malt in the tradition of Pale Ales, IPA’s however use much larger amounts of hops in the boil and boil them for longer to utilize their bittering compounds. IPA’s also commonly employ other techniques such as dry hopping to imbue the beer with hops in every aspect. These beers are markedly more bitter than most styles and offer a hefty malt backbone to complement. Hops are abundant and typically give off floral, herbal, citrusy, and piney aromas. IPA’s are typically in the 5% ABV -7% ABV range but growing trends towards Double and Imperial IPA’s are pushing it even higher with many above 10% ABV and the bitterness to match.

BELGIANS & SPECIALTIES

Some of the oldest and most revered beers in the world, Belgian recipes have been brewed for centuries. The oldest of these are Trappist Ales, brewed by monks in a handful of monasteries. Made with specific malts, sugars, and indigenous yeast that have been tamed over those centuries. Belgian Ales run the full gamut from the lighter Abbeys to the Strong Darks but usually lean to a higher alcohol content and stronger malt flavor. Lambics are another specialty of Belgium and employ the “open fermentation” technique – wild yeast innoculate the wort often imparting a pleasant sourness. Lambics are commonly made with fruit a make for a delightful detour from your typical beer.

FRUIT BEER, CIDER, & MEAD

Now being available in flavors ranging from blueberry to apricot, fruit beers are generally brewed by adding whole fruit or natural fruit flavor to a top fermented ale. Ciders are brewed with the whole fruit, the most popular of which is apple, creating an alcoholic version of a classic autumn beverage. Mead is a wine made from honey, is typically sweet and often infused with other fruit flavor.

American Hefeweizens tend to be deep orange in color, with notable hints of orange and citrus, where as traditional European Weiss style beers are a pale yellow color, with characteristic flavors of clove and banana.

Our beers change daily based on availability from the breweries and the popularity of a particular batch of brew. Our beer lists are updated regularly, but with the number of beers we carry it's inevitable that some will run out, especially the seasonals that are only brewed for a month or two. Thanks for understanding.
